Volleyball's Late Rally Comes Up Short at VTSU Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. - The Delhi Broncos Women's Volleyball team finished up their road trip to Vermont taking on NAC conference opponent Vermont State Johnson, coming up short in five sets.

The Broncos would struggle once again to get things going to start the game falling behind quickly in the first set 17-4, never really getting a chance to put a dent in that lead dropping the set 25-12. Delhi found themselves in a huge hole, being down 21-7 in the second set. The Badgers would win the set 25-11 and go up two sets to none with their eyes set on sweeping the Broncos.
The Broncos had their backs against the wall to enter the third set, but Delhi had other plans. The two teams traded points early, staying even at five before junior Noelle Placanica sparked a huge momentum shift, serving through a 7–0 Bronco run and notching an ace as Delhi surged ahead 12–5. The Badgers rallied late to make it 24–22, but senior Laurel Poston sealed the deal for the Broncos with a clutch kill to secure the third set, 25–22. Delhi would ride the momentum into the fourth set jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead over the Badgers. VTSU Johnson would then flip the script and claw their way back into the set going on a 10-1 run to take the lead 14-10. The Broncos would then tie the set at 17 a piece before they would score three straight points off of a service ace from first year Faith Sheltra and two back-to-back kills from junior Kayla Nuss to take the lead 20-17. The Broncos would hold on and steal the fourth set to tie things up at two sets each. In the fifth set, Delhi would take a brief 3-2 lead over the Badgers before they would put a stop to the Bronco stampede. VTSU Johnson would go on to take an 11-4 lead in the final set to take down the Broncos 15-5 and win the match three sets to two.

The Broncos would look to none other than Kayla Nuss to get things going with a team high of nine kills. First Year Mirando Mosco added six kills while also playing well defensively recording 12 digs in the loss. First Year Brooke Becenti tied for a team high with Nuss, working very hard to record 13 digs each. Max Ludlow led the way for the Badgers, tallying 14 kills to go along with 15 digs respectively. Tatum Kalahiki had a team high 16 digs for VTSU Johnson.

The Delhi Broncos Women's Volleyball Team will travel over to local foe SUNY Cobleskill to take on the Fighting Tigers in a conference matchup Wednesday, Oct. 29th at 7:00 p.m.
