Women's Basketball Drops First of Back to Back Conference Matchups

DELHI, N.Y. — SUNY Delhi Women's Basketball dropped a 73–50 decision to VTSU Johnson on Thursday night at Floyd L. Maines Arena. Johnson used a strong first half to build a 39–19 lead at the break, and though the Broncos put together an improved stretch in the third quarter, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Delhi trailed 20–10 after the opening period as Johnson shot 9-for-17 and generated 12 paint points. The Broncos struggled to convert in transition early and committed 13 first-half turnovers, allowing the Badgers to extend their margin. Johnson opened the second quarter on a 9–0 run and held Delhi to two field goals in the period to take control.

The Broncos played their best stretch coming out of halftime, cutting into the deficit behind back-to-back transition scores and improved defensive pressure. Delhi forced five third-quarter turnovers and got within 41–26 midway through the frame, but Johnson answered with second-chance baskets and timely scoring to halt the run.

Gianna Schmidt led Delhi with 11 rebounds and added four points, while Sarah Gaetano scored 10 points, including two three-pointers. Sereena Palau finished with seven points and six assists, and Juanita Guzman contributed six points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. Delhi generated 19 bench points but shot just 19-for-74 from the field.

Johnson's Kristie Zator posted a 22-point, 13-rebound performance to lead all scorers.

The loss drops Delhi to 1–7 overall and 0–3 in NAC play. The Broncos continue conference action tomorrow, hosting VTSU Lyndon with a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
