ONEONTA, NY - The SUNY Delhi Men's Soccer team opened up their 2025 campaign Friday, Aug. 29, falling short 3-1 to Hartwick on the road.
Hartwick midfielder Devin Chandler assisted on all three of the Hawks goals, which were all the result of set pieces (two throw ins, one corner kick). First-year Matthew Bender scored the lone goal for the Broncos in his NCAA debut, and Aidan Gaughan and Matt Serrao tallied assists on the score.
The Hawks struck first when Kwame Amissah-Arthur found the back of the net in the 17th minute, heading in a long throw-in from Chandler. The Hawks carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
It wasn't until the 68th minute that another goal was scored. Gaughan started the charge for the Broncos, forcing a turnover in their attacking zone and locating Serrao with a through ball. Serrao found Bender on the opposite side of the box, and Bender converted the equalizer. The Hawks would take only 11 minutes to respond, as this time Chandler found Matthieu Six on a corner-kick, and Six was able to sneak the ball into the Delhi net. Wilson Mount added an insurance goal for Hartwick with two to play, ending the Broncos' hope at a comeback.
The Broncos return to action Sunday, Aug. 31st at Neil Riddell Field for their home opener against Utica.
