Cortland, NY - What a weekend it was for the SUNY Delhi Track and Field teams! Both the men and women traveled to the two day Cortland Classic and aligned some quality training with great weather. The results were electric for the Broncos!
Highlighting the meet was senior Miranda Cole. Cole started the meet by winning the 400 meter dash in her first open 400 of her collegiate career. She stormed to the win, leading four Broncos into the top six places and broke the Delhi program record with a time of 56.48 seconds. She was joined in the top six by Amanda Intrieri (58.62) in third, Zoe Rodi (1:00.05) in fourth and Gabrielle Brown (1:00.59) in sixth. As if the 400 performance was not enough, Cole came back later in the day to post the fastest 200 meter time in the country this year, balsting to a new program record of 23.85 seconds. Hot on her heels was teammate Shaesha Johnson who was second overall in 24.11 for a new lifetime best as well as a national ranking of fourth.
Other event wins in the invitational came from Evie Eastman, who collected her first collegiate win, taking the title in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:57.80 and Charlotte Warner in the steeplechase with a time of 11:15.51
First year Emma Pelkey completed her first heptathlon in her collegiate career and finished third overall. Palkey, the indoor SUNYAC Champion in the pentathlon, posted the top performance in the field in the shot put and was third in the hurdles and high jump. The performance jumps into the program's all-time list at fourth.
On the men's side the track was equally as hot! Senior Cristhian Cuevas had a great weekend. He doubled down on the Delhi women and won the 200 meters, blasting a 21.37 second 200 meters for a huge personal best that ranks in the top 30 times in the country this year. He also posted a windy 10.56 second 100 that was good for a fourth place finish in the field overall. Joining Cuevas in the fast 200 was teammate Jabez Primus who ran 21.78 seconds for a sixth place finish.
Another win event win for the Broncos came from Michael Lilly in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Lilly ran 10:00.58 to top the field by almost 20 seconds.
Other strong finishes came from Richard Fuller who placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 49.10, Christopher Jean Simon who was second in the 110 Hurdles with a windy 14.58, Elliott Kish who was fifth in the 110 hurdle running 15.48 and the men's 4x400 relay team of Ibrahim Fofana, Dale Lambert, Joshua Alfonso and Aiden Burgos that placed fifth in 3:26.09.
The next week will be a busy one for the Broncos as some will race in the prestigious Penn Relays while others will make a trip to Vassar for an invitational as they tune up for the SUNYAC Championships.
