Brockport, NY - The Delhi Track and Field programs had a great showing at the SUNYAC Track and Field Championships this past weekend where the women placed third overall as a team and the men placed eighth in the 12 team field. Over the course of the two days there were new school records set in two events while the Broncos took overall titles in 7 individual events.
Perhaps the upset of the weekend in the meet came from first year Christopher Jean Simon in the 60 meter hurdles. Simon came into the meet with a personal best of 8.44 seconds. In the prelims, he ran an incredible race, dropping a full tenth of a second to qualify for the final with his 8.35 performance. In the final, he had a great start and never looked back. In what was a photo finish lean at the line, Simon dropped another tenth to win the title with his 8.25 performance. That time makes him the second fastest over the distance in program history as he won the race over the defending champion. Behind Simon, teammate Peair Idustrious posted a third place finish with a time of 8.43.
Other top finishes for the men came from Marvin Markland at fifth in the 60 meter dash (7.02), Richard Fuller at fifth in the 400 meter dash (50.33), and Michael Lilly at sixth in the 5,000 meter run (15:39.62).
For the women, some of the top names all season delivered in a big way. Sophomore Shaesha Johnson took two titles winning the 60 meter dash (7.67) and the 200 meter dash (25.47), well clear of the runner up in both events. Liekly the performance of the meet came from sophomore Amanda Intrieri who won the 800 meters. Intrieri found herself in a hot race early and took over thelead during the second half of the race. Her final time of 2:12.65 shattered her own school record and came out of the weekend as the sixth ranked time in the nation. Sophomore Charlotte Warner was also a double champion. Warner opened her weekend on day one with a strong performance in the 5,000 meters taking the title and the school record in 17:37.29 and then came back to win the 3,000 meters comfortably in 10:17.80.
In the field, first year Emma Pelkey won the individual title in the pentathlon with a new lifetime best of 3069 points. During the five event competition, Pelkey was the top performer in the high jump (1.54m) and the shot put (10.90m)
Other top finishes came from Kapriece Sigler at third in the 60 meter hurdles (9.21), Zoe Rodi at fourth in the 400 meters (1:00.16), Evei Eastman at sixth in the mile (5:23.87). The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Zoe Rodi, Evie Eastman, Amanda Intrieri and Gabrielle Brown also finished in fourth place overall.
Next up for many of the Broncos is the All-Atlantic Regional Championships being held at the Armory in NYC.
