Broncos Earn Regional Title and Break Record at AARTFC Championships

The Broncos Track and Field team traveled to the history Armory Track in New York City for the All Atlantic Region Championships in search of some great performances.  The trip resulted in one athlete earning regional champion, one new program record and the women placed ninth as a team in the field of over 60 schools.

Sophomore Shaesha Johnson had the biggest performance of the meet when she took the overall title in the 60 meter dash.  Johnson came into the day as the number two qualifier from the prelimnary races.  Running out of lane five, Johnson had Lucia Garcia-Beltran of TCNJ to her immediate left in lane four.  Garcia currently ranks number two in the nation, but Johnson, who ranks 11th was able to beat her to the line and post a strong regional title time of 7.58 seconds.

Charlotte Warner, one week after winning both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters at the SUNAYC Championships, again posted another great race in the regional 3,000 meters.  Warner ran to a third place finish in the event with a time of 10:07.36.

Another huge performance came from the women's 4x400 relay team of Zoe Rodi, Miranda Cole, Amanda Intrieri and Gabrielle Brown.  The team posted a time of 3:57.68 to break one of the oldest program records on the boards.  Back in 2004 Cassie Williams, Nicole Cubero, Perry Brown and Dorrain Denton set the previous mark at 4:04.08.  This team got off to a great start with Rodi splitting 59.98, followed by a 58.72 from Cole, a 59.22 from Intrieri and a 59.75 from Brown.  That performance was good enough for eighth place overall.

Other strong performances for the women came from Cole who went on to place eighth overall in the 200 meters individually with a time of 25.23 and first year Emma Pelkey went over 3,000 points in the pentathlon for the second week in a row and placed sixth in the event.

On the men's side, the 4x200 meter relay team of Deron Davis, Peair Industrious, Jabez Primus and Cristhian Cuevas placed second overall with a time of 1:29.54. Industrious also ran a strong 8.32 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles for a seventh place finish.

The team expects to have two athletes, Shaesha Johnson and Amanda Intrieri, qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held next year in Birmingham, Alabama.  This will mark the first time any member of the women's indoor track and field team will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships!
