BANGOR, Maine — The SUNY Delhi softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to UMaine-Farmington on Thursday morning in the opening round of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament, sending the Broncos into the elimination bracket of the double-elimination event.
Delhi struck first in the top of the first when Adrienne Neff singled to lead off the game, moved to second on a Cayla Moroni sacrifice bunt, and came around to score on a Maine-Farmington error to make it 1-0. The Beavers answered in the bottom half with a four-run inning, as Maddie Pike drove in two with a single to center, Lisa Truchin added an RBI single through the right side, and Angelina Ventullo capped the rally with a run-scoring single to second.
Angelina Dickel pulled the Broncos back within two in the second, doubling to right center to plate Grace Sperry and cut the deficit to 4-2. Maine-Farmington pulled away in the fourth, scoring four more on a Jessica Dow two-RBI single, a Truchin RBI single, and a bases-loaded walk to Ventullo. Delhi got one more in the seventh on a Stephanie Huckabee RBI single through the left side that scored Neff.
Truchin went the distance for Maine-Farmington, scattering seven hits over seven innings while striking out three to improve to 6-2. Alethea Ferrara took the loss for Delhi, allowing eight runs (all earned) on nine hits over 3.2 innings before Mikayla Wright and Dickel combined for 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Neff went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to pace Delhi, while Moroni added two hits and Dickel finished with the team's lone extra-base hit.
Delhi falls to 14-20 on the season and will face UMaine-Presque Isle on Friday in the elimination bracket of the NAC Tournament.
