Bronx, NY - SUNY Delhi softball traveled to South Field Wednesday evening and came away with a doubleheader sweep of Lehman, winning game one by a score of 18-0 before taking game two 11-2. With the wins the Broncos improve to 5-10 on the season.
Game one was over quickly as Delhi scored four times in the first inning and erupted for fourteen more in the second, before the game was ended early. The Broncos sent the entire lineup to the plate multiple times in the second inning, taking advantage of five Lehman errors on the day. Julian Ponce drove in three, Angelina Dickel added three RBI including a double, and Stephanie Huckabee chipped in two. Mikayla Wright tossed one inning of two-hit ball for the win. The game ended after two innings when a Lehman player was injured following a substitution, leaving the Lightning without an eligible player to fill the position. With both teams still able to take the field, play continued to game two.
In the nightcap, Delhi built an 8-0 lead through three innings and cruised from there. Stephanie Huckabee got things going with a solo home run to center in the third, one of the highlights of a four-run inning for the Broncos. Ayla Ramic went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Grace Sperry added a triple. Lauren Laferriere went the distance in the circle, allowing just two unearned runs on two hits over five innings while striking out three to earn her first win of the season. Lehman scored twice in the fourth on a pair of Delhi errors but never seriously threatened.
Delhi travels up to Maine to take on UMaine-Farmington and Thomas for a road conference back-to-back this weekend.
