HORSEHEADS, N.Y. — The SUNY Delhi softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Elmira on Thursday, dropping game one 4-0 before bouncing back with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
Game One: Elmira 4, SUNY Delhi 0
Delhi managed three hits but couldn't push a run across as Elmira's Savannah Persun went the distance in a complete-game shutout, striking out six without issuing a walk. Elmira got on the board early on a Teona Cruz RBI single in the first, then broke it open in the fifth when Jocelyn Jean doubled to right center to clear the bases and plate three runs. Alethea Ferrara took the loss, allowing four runs over four innings before Mikayla Wright tossed two scoreless frames in relief. Adrienne Neff, Grace Sperry, and Angelina Dickel collected Delhi's three hits.
Game Two: SUNY Delhi 3, Elmira 1
Delhi flipped the script in the nightcap behind a complete-game effort from Wright, who allowed just one run on five hits over seven innings while striking out one. The Broncos jumped on Elmira starter Shelby Dawe in the first, as Dickel was hit by a pitch, Cayla Moroni moved her over on a sacrifice bunt, and Stephanie Huckabee tripled down the left field line to score her. Sperry followed with a run-scoring groundout to make it 2-0. Elmira got one back in the fourth on a Sophia Polzella RBI double, but Delhi added an insurance run in the seventh when Taylor Myers reached on a fielder's choice to score Carly Bernard. Huckabee, Myers, and Dickel each collected a hit to pace Delhi, and Wright improved to 2-3 on the season.
Delhi moves to 6-15 on the year and returns to action Friday for a home doubleheader against Lesley at Cooperstown All Star Village, starting at 5 p.m.
