Lifeguard Training

First Class (Free)

MEET OUR LIFEGUARDS

SUNY Delhi offers several opportunities for students to become certified as Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors. In addition to the for credit courses offered through the college, non-credit bearing courses in waterfront lifeguarding are also offered by our staff.

SUNY Delhi offers both Lifeguarding (PEDH 164) and Water Safety Instructor (PEDH 165) as a credit bearing courses in both the fall and spring semesters each academic year. More information about these courses may be found in the college catalog.

 Lifeguarding Training Class

REGISTRATION FORM

  • DATE: April 13 - May 14, 2026

RED CROSS includes: Waterfront Lifeguarding Training, AED, First Aid, & CPR-FPR.

ATTENDANCE AT ALL SESSIONS FOR THE CLASS IS MANDATORY: NO EXCEPTIONS

Prerequisites with Waterfront:

  • Minimum age of 15
  • Swim 350 yard continuously: front crawl, or breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes legs only, 200 yard swim
  • Starting in the shallow water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10lb object, return to surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute 40 seconds
  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool
  • Class size limited - NOTE: CLASS MINIMUM OF SIX.
  • Certification Requirements:
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
  • Demonstrate competency in the three final skill scenariosCorrectly answer at least 80% on all the written tests

Prerequisite without Waterfront:

Prerequisite 1: Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and then swim 50 more yards. While swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. When treading, you must use only your legs.

 

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.

Lifeguard Recertification

REGISTRATION FORM

  • DATE: Friday, May 15, 2026 - 8 am to 7 pm

Prerequisites

  • Must possess valid American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certificates.
  • Certification includes: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid review. Be prepared to get wet in the water. Must competently complete all skills and pass the written tests (80% or better).
  • A minimum of six people must be signed up for training in order for the course to run.

Cost: $125 per person for Lifeguarding with First Aid/CPR‐FPR or $65.00 for just CPR‐FPR re‐certification.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED for Lifeguards Review Class

  • DATE: TBA - 8 am to 1pm

    • Cost: $65 per person

Prerequisites

  • Must possess valid American Red Cross, CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certificate for Lifeguards.
  • Certification includes: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer review. Must competently complete all skills and pass the written test (80% or better). $65.
  • A minimum of six people must be signed up for training in order for the course to run.

Cost: $65 for just CPR-FPR recertification
