Broncos Drop Doubleheader to SUNY Poly

ONEONTA, N.Y. — The SUNY Delhi Softball team dropped a pair of home contests to SUNY Poly on Wednesday afternoon, falling 9-3 and 6-1 to move to 1-11 on the season.

Game One: SUNY Poly 9, SUNY Delhi 3

The Wildcats wasted no time in game one, plating two runs in the top of the first on a two-RBI double from Annabella Mondello off Delhi starter Alethea Ferrara. SUNY Poly would continue to build on that lead, adding one run in the second and two more in the third to stretch the margin to 5-0 before Delhi could respond.

The Broncos finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, as Stephanie Huckabee singled through the left side to bring in Samantha Martin, and Carly Bernard followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Huckabee. The two-run frame pulled Delhi within three, but Mondello and the Wildcats' offense wouldn't allow the Broncos to keep pace. SUNY Poly tacked on one run in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to pull away for the 9-3 final.

Ferrara took the loss, pitching five innings while surrendering seven earned runs on ten hits. Angelina Dickel came on in relief and completed the game's final two frames. On the offensive side, Huckabee led the way going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Bernard added an RBI single. Riley Martin drove in Delhi's third run with a single to right-center in the sixth. Mondello was a force for the Wildcats on both sides, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs while throwing a complete game, striking out ten Broncos on 137 pitches.

Game Two: SUNY Poly 6, SUNY Delhi 1

The nightcap proved more of the same, with the Wildcats taking a quick 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Kelly Powell in the second inning. Delhi answered right back in the bottom of the frame, tying the contest at one when Jaden Taylor scored on an RBI single from Samantha Martin.

The tie would be short-lived. SUNY Poly went back in front in the third on an RBI single from Alivia Turk and a run-scoring double by Mondello, and then broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by Powell's second home run of the game. Angelina Dickel started in the circle for Delhi and took the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits across 3.2 innings before Mikayla Wright came on in relief and turned in a strong showing, holding SUNY Poly scoreless across the game's final 3.1 innings. The Broncos managed five hits on the day but struggled to string them together, leaving ten runners on base.

Huckabee went 2-for-3 with and Jaden Taylor tallied with a run scored in game two. Shelbi Hagues earned the win in the circle for the Wildcats, scattering five hits and striking out seven over a complete game.

Delhi will look to bounce back as they take on rival Cobleskill Saturday, April 4th for a conference-opening doubleheader.
